Primary school
Ai Saleggi

1972-1978
Locarno, TI

Holding 600 students, the school complex consists of three volumes: a first volume, built in 1972 and consisting of 9 classrooms, which incorporates the alignment of a residential area, a second volume, 14 classrooms, which was built in 1974-75 and the gymnasium, built in 1979.
The classrooms are open on both sides and normally oriented towards the outside or even towards the small courtyards.

The school area is also accessible to passers-by, being therefore part of the district without being disturbed by such proximity. It does not appear to be designed for educational activities only.
Its “open” character is reflected in the simplicity of the construction elements. The metal skeleton supports a roofing in fretted sheet metal, while the masonry is in exposed brick.
